Global Population



Northern N. Atlantic only. In U.S. Atlantic found north of North Carolina but concentrated in the Gulf of Maine. May move inshore in summer and offshore in winter following prey. 


Description and Natural History



Physical Description
Adult male: 2.7m, 234 kg
Adult female: 2.4m, 182 kg
Neonate (newborn): 1.2m, 32 kg

Natural History
Sexually mature at 5-8 years. Breed May-August. Single calf every 2-3 years, born June-July after gestation of 11 onths. Lactation lasts 12-18 months. May live 27 or more years. Small groups inshore, groups to 500 or more offshore. Fast and acrobatic: breach, lobtail, infrequent bow rider. Associate with humpback, fin, and pilot whales. Strandings common.
