Intern with CCSN

The Cape Cod Stranding Network, Inc. internship program provides interested and dedicated individuals with in-depth experience in marine mammal stranding response.  Interns will assist stranding staff in all aspects of stranding response work.  This internship program is open to undergraduate students and graduates throughout the year.  Winter – early spring months are particularly busy.  Applicants should know that strandings are unpredictable in nature, and while we do handle a high number of animals each year, there may also be extended periods of office work.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Live pinniped field response including health assessment, restraint for exam and fluid administration, data collection, transfer to rehab facilities
  • Live cetacean field response including supportive care, health assessment, data collection, relocation & release
  • Marine mammal carcass data collection and necropsy
  • Data entry
  • Photo archiving
  • Equipment/gear maintenance and cleaning
  • Public outreach

Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and be in good physical condition (able to walk long distances on difficult terrain and lift 50 lbs).  Previous animal handling experience and a background in biology is preferred.  Computer literacy is required; proficiency with MS Access a plus.  Applicant must be able to follow instructions and protocols effectively.  Good communication skills, both written and oral, are expected.

Time Commitment: 8-24 hours per week.  Minimum three month commitment.  Office hours are 9-5 but strandings can occur at any time and response can last into the night.

Compensation: These internships are unpaid and CCSN unfortunately cannot provide housing for interns.
