Beacon
This whale, known as “Beacon” to whale researchers, washed up dead on a beach in Wellfleet in December. CCSN’s staff conducted a necropsy (animal autopsy) to determine the whale’s identity, to collect valuable data, and to attempt to determine the cause of death.
Common Dolphin - Squaw Island
This common dolphin stranded at Squaw Island in Hyannisport in September of 2004. CCSN staff and volunteers from the beach moved the animal onto foam padding on the beach so a physical exam and collection of blood could be performed. The exam and blood parameters showed the animal was unhealthy and therefore not fit for release. Although the difficult decision was made to euthanize the animal the discovery of brain lesions and parasites in the brain told us we did the right thing for the animal.
Harp Seal Stranding
A harp seal rests at CCSN’s seal holding pen while awaiting transport to a rehabilitation facility. This seal stranded at a beach in Harwich in February of 2004.
